Originally, the whisk was made out of wire. The current whisks are plastic and glow-in-the-dark. While glowing is a neat feature, they are not nearly as durable as the old wire whisks were. This is my second plastic one; the first shattered over a couple years use. Given the choice, I'd prefer to have a wire whisk instead of a glowing plastic one. The wire version tracked wire bundles better, and I have a flashlight that lets me see where the front rod is located.
